O asteroide demora, em média, 271 dias para completar uma volta ao redor do Sol

O Escritório de Coordenação de Defesa Planetária da Agência Aeroespacial dos Estados Unidos (Nasa) está rastreando um novo asteroide em órbita espacial com pequena chance de impactar o planeta Terra. A data de maior aproximação prevista é em 14 de fevereiro de 2046, dia em que é celebrado o Valentine’s Day (Dia dos Namorados) em diversos países do mundo, como Estados Unidos e Canadá. Nomeado de 2023 DW, o corpo celeste tem 49,29m de diâmetro e viaja a 24,63 quilômetros por segundo.

Ainda conforme informações no site Eyes on Asteroids, da Nasa, ele está a 0,13 unidade astronômica de distância entre a Terra e o Sol, a 149,5 milhões de quilômetros. Com possibilidade de impactar a Terra, o asteroide deve passar a menos de 0,05 unidade astronômica do nosso planeta. Mas ainda estão sendo realizados monitoramentos sobre o real impacto do corpo celeste ao Planeta Terra.

"Muitas vezes, quando novos objetos são descobertos pela primeira vez, são necessárias várias semanas de dados para reduzir as incertezas e prever adequadamente suas órbitas anos no futuro", disse em publicação nas redes sociais a Nasa Asteroid Watch.

De acordo com a agência, o asteroide demora, em média, 271 dias para completar uma volta ao redor do Sol.

Por enquanto, com chances pequenas de atingir a Terra, o corpo celeste não é motivo de preocupação. Ainda de acordo com a publicação, os analistas de órbita continuarão monitorando o asteroide e atualizando as previsões conforme mais dados forem chegando.

O Escritório de Coordenação de Defesa Planetária da Nasa detecta, rastreia e caracteriza objetos próximos à Terra para permitir a mitigação de possíveis impactos futuros. Veja aqui mais informações.

Teste para 'salvar' o planeta

Em outubro do ano passado, a Nasa lançou com sucesso mais uma fase da missão Dart (em inglês: Teste de Redirecionamento de Duplo Asteroide) para desviar o curso de um asteroide de 160 metros em um "treinamento" para salvar a Terra em futuras ameaças.

"Todos nós temos uma responsabilidade de protegermos nosso planeta. Afinal, ele é o único que temos", disse Bill Nelson, administrador da agência, na ocasião. "Essa missão mostra que a Nasa está tentando ficar pronta para o que quer que o universo jogue na nossa direção."
