A Agência Aeroespacial dos Estados Unidos (Nasa)  anunciou hoje (19), em entrevista na Califórnia, a descoberta de dez planetas semelhantes à Terra. Eles fazem parte de um catálogo de "exoplanetas", como são chamados os planetas que orbitam em outros sistemas, fora da órbita do Sol. 

O documento tem como base dados do telescópio espacial Kepler. A nova versão do catálogo traz 219 novos "potenciais" planetas, incluindo os dez com características semelhantes à Terra.

O catálogo, segundo a Nasa, mostra indícios da existência dos planetas, mas ainda é preciso mais dados para uma acurada classificação. Mesmo assim, no caso dos dez possíveis planetas similares à Terra, os cientistas apontam características interessantes, tais como o tamanho de suas superfícies, a maneira com que orbitam ao redor de suas estrelas e a presença de água e de uma parte rochosa líquida que poderia agrupar na superfície de um planeta rochoso.

Mais números e quatro anos de pesquisas

O documento reúne quatro anos de pesquisas baseadas nos dados recebidos pelo telescópio Kepler.  Esta é a oitava versão do catálogo e agora a Nasa aponta a possibilidade de existência de 4.034 candidatos a exoplanetas. Deste total, 2.335 já tiveram a confirmação de serem planetas reais.

Com os dez  novos exoplanetas adicionados ao catálogo, a Nasa amplia para 50 a quantidade de planetas que teriam condições semelhantes ao modelo terrestre e poderiam abrigar alguma espécie de vida.

Durante a entrevista, o cientista Mario Perez, que faz parte da Divisão de Astrofísica da Nasa, afirmou que os dados coletados pelo Kleper são únicos porque somente esse relatório tem planetas análogos ao sistema terrestre. "Essas informações podem ajudar e orientar futuras missões da Nasa para encontrar diretamente outra terra”, afirmou.
