Um estudo coordenado pela Universidade Queen Mary de Londres descobriu um novo planeta "irmão" da Terra após mais de três anos de estudo. A novidade foi publicada na prestigiada revista "Nature" nesta quarta-feira (24).

O astro está rente à estrela Proxima Centauri, que é "vizinha" do nosso Sol, e foi batizado de "Proxima B". Com os cálculos de distância e diâmetro, os cientistas determinaram que o planeta poderia ter água líquida em seu interior e é formado por um sistema rochoso semelhante à Terra. Com isso, ele poderia gerar vida como ocorre em nosso planeta.

Um primeiro indício da existência do "irmão" da Terra foi descoberta em 2013 e batizada de "Pale Red Dot" ("Pequeno Ponto Vermelho"). Usando e analisando dados coletados por dois telescópios do Observatório Europeu do Sul (ESO), que fica no Chile, os investigadores descobriram que, através de informações combinadas, tratava-se de um planeta e não de uma simples estrela.

Os elementos coletados até o momento mostram que o "Proxima B" possui uma massa equivalente a 1,3 vez o tamanho da Terra e completa sua órbita a cada 11,2 dias.

De acordo com o coordenador do estudo, Guillem Anglada-Escudé, "a busca por vida no 'Proxima B' será nosso novo passo". Para ele a "paixão" do grupo de especialistas fez com que fosse possível alcançar o resultado anunciado hoje.

Essa é a segunda grande descoberta em questão de planetas anunciada em 2016. Em maio, a Nasa informou que o telescópio Kepler localizou 1.284 novos planetas desde julho do ano passado e que analisa a possibilidade de outros 1.327 terem esse status.

Ainda de acordo com os norte-americanos, aproximadamente, 550 desses astros têm estruturas similares à Terra e que nove deles estão em zonas habitável de seu "sol".
