Bem nas profundez da Terra, muito abaixo da superfície que pisamos, há um massivo reservatório de água que contém três vezes a quantidade de água que existe nos oceanos que conhecemos.

Uma equipa de investigadores norte-americanos recorreu a dois mil sismómetros para estudar as ondas sísmicas de mais de 500 sismos. Através da velocidade das ondas, em diferentes profundidades, os cientistas conseguiram determinar que tipo de rochas eram atravessadas pelas ondas antes de alcançarem os sensores.

Assim, descobriram que cerca de 700 quilómetros abaixo dos nossos pés na “zona de transição” entre o manto inferior e o superior existia uma rocha chamada ringwoodite.

“A ringwoodite é como uma esponja, a absorver água. Há algo muito especial na sua estrutura cristalina, o que lhe permite atrair hidrogénio e prender água“, explicou o geofísico Steve Jacobsen em 2014. “Este mineral pode conter muita água sob condições do manto profundo”.

Algumas experiências anteriores sugeriram que a ringwoodite pode conter até 1,5% de água, e as ondas sísmicas detetadas eram consistentes com a rocha por baixo dos nossos pés com água. A equipa estimou que se apenas 1% da rocha na zona de transição fosse água, tal significaria que contém três vezes mais água do que todos os oceanos na superfície da Terra. Essa previsão iria coincidir com os resultados obtidos.

“Se houver uma quantidade substancial de H2O na zona de transição, então deverá acontecer algum derretimento em áreas onde há fluxo para o manto inferior”, disse o sismólogo Brandon Schmandt, “e isso é consistente com o que encontrámos”.

Jacobsen acredita que o estudo contribuiu para a evidência de que a água da Terra “veio de dentro”, disse à New Scientist.
